Deloitte acquires Cannabis Compliance

November 29, 2019  By Deloitte

Deloitte has acquired Mississauga-based Cannabis Compliance Inc. (CCI).

Specializing in licensing and compliance, CCI has become a trusted advisor to many Canadian cannabis business leaders, says Deloitte. The newly established CCI Deloitte will offer greater resources and a higher level of knowledge across the entire cannabis consulting spectrum, providing end-to-end services to their clients.

“Canada has quickly become a global leader in the cannabis industry,” said Anthony Viel, CEO, Deloitte Canada. “As legislation evolves in other countries, it’s important for businesses to understand and prepare for unique risks and challenges. Businesses will need to continue innovating to secure a healthy, sustainable competitive position. By putting Canadian values at the forefront, we can shape the future of responsible and competitive cannabis business growth to help the industry mature in Canada and around the world.”

Deloitte welcomes CCI’s 75 employees to its headquarters in downtown Toronto. Brian Wagner, CCI’s founder and chair joins Deloitte as a senior advisor, while President and CEO Dale Hooper, Chief Financial Officer Sid Hathiramani and Vice President of Quality and Regulatory Karina Lahnakoski will become partners in Deloitte’s Risk Advisory practice.

“This is an exciting chapter for our business, our team, and the entire cannabis sector, as the power of CCI and Deloitte’s combined resources will offer leading client service and capability,” said Dale Hooper, President and CEO of CCI. “We’re looking forward to joining the Deloitte team and continuing to make a positive and lasting impact on the industry and those it serves.”

“The addition of CCI’s experienced team increases our capacity to deliver end-to-end consulting services to our cannabis clients in Canada and around the world,” said Poonam Singh, managing partner of Risk Advisory for Deloitte. “This acquisition brings incredible talent and resources to ensure we continue to provide clients with the ability to achieve their growth ambition in a responsible manner. As the cannabis ecosystem continues to develop, businesses will become more complex, particularly in the area of regulatory and compliance in cannabis. CCI’s knowledge will help clients untangle these challenges to allow their businesses to grow and thrive.”

Combining Deloitte and CCI’s knowledge and experience in this sector is intended to provide clients with the insights they need to compete in today’s market.

“The cannabis sector presents significant and exponential growth opportunities for our clients, nationally and globally,” said Jennifer Lee, managing partner of Growth Platforms, a practice area of Deloitte that helps clients focus on value creation in cannabis and the consumer and retail industry.
