July 11, 2012, Toronto — The concept of the “100 kilometre diet” has made a significant impact in the evolution of local, fresh food and reduction of greenhouse gases. But many commercial enterprises have struggled with the availability and affordability of local supplies.

Toronto-based Urban Produce, Inc. is a Canadian social-purpose business committed to making a positive social and environmental impact through establishing a more sustainable, affordable method of food production in Canada’s urban communities, while helping business owners grow their bottom line.

“Our lucrative business model meets our triple bottom line mandate to support people and the planet, while maintaining a strong financial return by minimizing transportation costs and effect on food items and providing our retailers with local, nutritious food options for their customers,” says co-founder and CEO, Montgomery Bjornson.

Urban Produce builds and operates commercial-scale (up to 45,000 square feet) greenhouses on the rooftops of food retailers and other urban settings. By selling produce directly upon harvesting and minimizing transport and the volatility of gas prices, Urban Produce greenhouses offer the retailer longer product shelf life at a fixed-price, protecting the retailer from the fluctuating marketplace.

“Urban Produce greenhouses will garner extensive exposure for their physical prominence, innovation and leadership role in the communities in which they are established,” says Bjornson.

Urban Produce is currently in the process of reaching out to building owners and food retailers, and securing long-term agreements for their greenhouse farms across the Canada.
