June 4, 2012 — Garden retail members of the Canadian Nursery Landscape Association (CNLA) are showing their support in greater numbers than ever before for the third annual National Plastics Recycling Event, scheduled to take place from June 22 to July 1.

Originally a Landscape Ontario program started in 2009, the program spread across Canada in 2010 and offered six “depot” locations collecting more than 53,000 pounds of plastic.

Last year over 40 garden centres in six provinces participated collecting 63,150 pounds, and for 2012 there are over 50 participants from eight provinces that will be recycling plastics at their garden centres.

When the program first started, consumers in Ontario were asking for ways to recycle their garden plastics – Landscape Ontario staff took the initiative to launch a recycling program at the Landscape Ontario office in Milton, working out the kinks before launching the program to their members.

Since then, the program has changed and grown putting the focus onto collections at member garden centres across the country to help drive traffic back to their stores.

A number of recycling partners across Canada have been lined up to help with collections during the event and can be found online at the CNLA website (www.cnla-acpp.ca).
