Cannabis will be one of the major themes at this year’s Canadian Society for Horticultural Science Annual Meeting in Niagara Falls, held from October 4 to 6.
One of a series of symposia, the cannabis talks will be held on October 5. Chaired by Dr. Youbin Zheng, the cannabis symposium will feature talks from:
· Dr. Ernest Small, principal scientist with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada and adjunct professor at Ryerson University. Author of Cannabis: A Complete Guide, Dr. Small selected the standard strain of marijuana that was officially employed in Canada for 13 years following the legalization of medical marijuana in 2001, and used to treat over 100,000 patients. His classification of Cannabis on the basis of THC content has been adopted by numerous countries as the foundation of legislation governing hemp and marijuana cultivation.
· Dr. Hemant Lata, senior research scientist at the National Center for Natural Products Research (NCNPR), School of Pharmacy, University of Mississippi. Dr. Lata has worked on screening, conservation, micropropagation and multiplication of different varieties of Cannabis sativa. Dr. Lata’s research interests include – cell, tissue and organ culture of medicinally important plants; cryopreservation; alternative techniques for short and long term storage of plant germplasm and evaluation of micropropagated plants for secondary metabolites and genetic stability.
· Dr. Jonathan Page is the co-founder and CEO of Anandia, a cannabis testing and genetics company based in Vancouver, and an adjunct professor at UBC. He has worked on deciphering the genetics and biochemistry of medicinal plants, including the production of cannabinoids in cannabis. In 2010, Jonathan co-led the Canadian team that reported the first sequence of the cannabis genome.
The annual meeting will also offer a series of symposia on different topics, including vegetables, post-harvest storage, processing and nutraceuticals. Among them, Dr. Cynthia Scott-Dupree will be the keynote speaker at the vegetable symposium, presenting the latest research on insect pest management in vegetables using RNAi and sterile insect techniques.

Pre-conference tours will include trips to St. David’s Hydroponics Vegetable Greenhouses and the CannTrust Cannabis Greenhouse Operation.
Early bird deadline for conference registration is August 10.
