Canada’s newest research facilities officially open

Research and Production Complex near Brooks will help ensure that
Alberta’s crop industry is among the most competitive and progressive in
the world.

March 6, 2012, Brooks, Alta. — The newly-opened, world-class Greenhouse Research and Production Complex near Brooks will help ensure that Alberta’s crop industry is among the most competitive and progressive in the world.



“This facility supports Alberta’s greenhouse and crop industry and is a significant asset for not only Alberta, but Canada as well,” said Evan Berger, minister of agriculture and rural development.

“The new complex offers our greenhouse and crop industries the facilities, technology and the people to help address the opportunities and challenges in crop production, today and tomorrow.”

The new facility is an investment of more than $17 million by the Alberta government in the province’s greenhouse and crop research and production industry. It has unmatched capabilities in research, demonstration, development, commercialization, education and extension. For producers, growers, agribusinesses, scientists and educators, it will be the place to go for solutions, support and training.

“This investment is a component of our strategic vision for the province,” said Jeff Johnson, minister of infrastructure. “By investing in facilities and technologies for the future, we help build a strong economy and stronger communities.”

From the facility’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) to its world-class data gathering system, the Greenhouse Research and Production Complex will help ensure that Alberta is on the leading edge of applied and adaptive research, technology transfer and technology commercialization.

Construction of the 60,000-square-foot facility, including its 10 research bays, four production greenhouses, administrative, training, storage and plant management work areas, was completed in July 2010 and began operation in 2011, prior to the official opening.
