Newfoundland moving to Red Seal

November 16, 2012  By Canadian Garden Centre & Nursery

Nov. 16, 2012, St. John’s, NL — Landscape Newfoundland & Labrador (LNL) is working with owners and operators to prepare the province’s landscape and horticulture industry for Red Seal certification.

Red Seal is an inter-provincial certification that will help standardize the landscape industry. Red Seal endorsement is recognized by employers as a standard of excellence and indicates that the certificate holder has met the interprovincial knowledge, skills and work experience/competency standards established by the industry.

"We are encouraging our members to take a good look at the benefits of Red Seal certification for the industry – and for their own businesses, " said Doreen Layman, president of LNL.

The Red Seal program is recognized as the interprovincial standard of excellence in the skilled trades. The standards were established to provide skilled workers with greater mobility across Canada. Through the program, both apprentices who have completed their training and certified journeypersons are able to obtain a Red Seal endorsement on their Certificate of Qualification by successfully completing an Interprovincial Red Seal Exam (IP Exam). Individuals who obtain the Red Seal endorsement can work anywhere in Canada without further training or examination.

Landscape and horticulture owners and operators and their senior employees are encouraged to attend an information session on the Red Seal program. Representatives will present information about the direct entry option for experienced staff, challenging the red seal exam and the roles and responsibilities of journeypersons when mentoring apprentices. Those in attendance will also receive assistance in completing the required paperwork.

The information session is schedule for Nov. 23 at 3:30 p.m. at the College of the North Atlantic in the Murphy Centre, room L201.
