Mobile tool reveals gardener preferences

burpee-mygardendesigner_webMay 16, 2012, West Chicago, IL — In just one month, the new Burpee Home Gardens mobile tool has already created over 3,000 mixed container recipes for home gardeners across the country.

The My Garden Designer tool, which launched a month ago, also revealed consumers' gardening habits, colour choices and preferences.

"The new My Garden Designer tool not only makes garden design easy for home gardeners right from their mobile phones, but it is also providing some incredible insight on consumer gardening habits," said Diane Hurd, director of marketing for Burpee Home Gardens. "We've gathered input on colour popularity, garden size, as well as planting preferences. Understanding the types of container recipes that the consumer 'makes on her own' is unchartered territory. This is really the first time we can get a glimpse into what combinations consumers are planting in pots or in the ground."

This spring, gardeners have used My Garden Designer almost equally for both garden bed combinations (50 per cent) and container/basket combinations (50 per cent). The tool has also uncovered that 75 per cent of gardeners created combo recipes for sun locations, 25 per cent for shade.

Large garden beds still seem to be a popular project, taking the largest share of the overall recipes, with beds bigger than six feet receiving the most choices at 56 per cent. Medium (four to six feet) and small beds (two to four feet) come in at 29 per cent and 15 per cent, respectively.

In containers, mid-size (16 to 24 inches) is the most prevalent choice at 52 per cent, followed by large (more than 24 inches) at 31 per cent and small containers (10 to 16 inches) at 17 per cent.

The mobile tool also offers a glimpse of consumers' colour preferences. Within fillers, there is a big diversity of colour, with purple gaining the most use (24 per cent). Red (18 per cent), yellow (16 per cent) and pink (15 per cent) are also popular colours. Spiller choices tend to be more neutral-based colours, with silver leading the way with 31 per cent of the top selections. White (14 per cent) and green (14 per cent) are also popular options. When it comes to garden "thrillers," reds (25 per cent), greens (23 per cent) and pinks (14 per cent) are top picks.

Launched earlier this spring, the My Garden Designer mobile tool is designed to take the guesswork out of flower colour, height and compatibility. Gardeners are offered quick selections of "thriller, filler and spiller" arrangements for patio containers and garden beds. The tool suggests multiple designs and arrangement styles, creates a plant shopping list, and also offers a where-to-buy store search.
