image001-10Mar. 26, 2013 — Rescue!'s new fly tape uses VisiLure technology to lure bugs with colours, shapes and other visual stimuli to which they respond.

Using an electro-retinogram (ERG), Rescue! scientists measured photoreceptor responses in flies' retinas to different wavelengths of visual stimuli to identify the most attractive colours and intensities. They then used this information to incorporate insect-attracting visual cues into the company's fly tape.

"Flies have large compound eyes that don’t focus so they see everything as a blurry image. The 3-D pattern and color simulate an image on which the flies can better focus,” explains Rod Schneidmiller, president and founder of Sterling International, the manufacturer of Rescue! products.

The tape is easy to unroll and hangs flat rather than curling up, leaving more surface area available to catch flies. Because it has no odour, it can be used both indoors and out.

VisiLure will be available in Canada beginning in June. For more information, visit www.rescue.com.
