The Sawaya Garden Trials are back this year in Simcoe, Ont., but visits will be coordinated a little differently from previous years. Those looking to visit between July 20 and 24 must make an appointment in advance and adhere to COVID-19 physical distancing guidelines.

“Our annual Open House will look slightly different this year. In order to give you all much deserved time to explore the outdoor trials and keep within safety protocols we are offering pre-booked appointment times over the span of one week,” writes organizers.

Close to 3,000 varieties will be on display, says organizer Melhem Sawaya, including new introductions, foliage, tropicals, mixes, hangers, container vegetables and more. With temperatures exceeding 30 degrees Celsius for weeks now, Sawaya says this is the first time in the trials’ 20-year history where they’ve had to water plants twice in one day.

“Come and see what’s surviving this heat,” he says. Conditions have been sunny, hot and highly humid – a real test of heat-tolerant varieties and an experiment for shade-loving ones. Even the Boliviensis begonias have been outside and without shade.

The Sawaya Garden Trials will be on display until August 10.
