Kam’s moves into state-of-the-art facilities

November 27, 2013  By Dave Harrison/Greenhouse Canada

Nov. 27, 2013, Guelph, ON – Kam’s Growers Supply is continuing to
grow. The company hosted a well-attended open house of its new warehouse
and office facilities adjacent to the Guelph airport earlier this
month.

The company previously leased a smaller facility in an older industrial area of Guelph.

The company was established in 2005 by Kameron Fordyce. At that time, it
was a one-man operation with a focus on retailing to commercial
mushroom producers across Canada.

In 2007, he hired his first employee, his wife Julie. The two had worked
previously for Engage Agro; Kam was the national sales manager and
Julie was the territory representative in British Columbia.

“Given Kam’s background and the products he was selling into the
mushroom market, diversifying into greenhouse floriculture, greenhouse
vegetables and nursery markets was a natural progression,” notes Julie.

Since then, the company has grown to a total of 10 people plus two agents (Quebec and B.C.).

More than 500 products

“We have approximately 500 products that we are selling to niche markets
including nurseries, greenhouse vegetables, greenhouse flowers, turf,
field vegetables, and mushrooms,” says Julie.

Guelph is a great location to service their industries across Canada.
It’s close to Hwy. 401 and other major transportation routes. It’s a
central location for sales reps, and the proximity to the University of
Guelph is also an asset.

"In addition," notes Julie, "we like Guelph as a great community to raise our family.”

Streamlined operations

The new location, in addition to being much larger than the previous
facility, has allowed the company to streamline its operation by putting
its cold storage, pesticide storage and fertilizer storage all under
one roof.

“The newer building and facilities make working at Airpark more
efficient and more pleasant for customers and staff,” adds Julie.

The spacious new facility includes a state-of-the-art cold storage unit
that allows the company to import, store and ship materials that require
temperature-controlled storage. “This allows us to quickly meet the
fluctuating needs of our customers and suppliers.”

They are also completing a chemical storage (AWSA Phase III certification) room.

Kam’s Growers Supply also contracts warehouse space in B.C. “This allows
us to minimize expenses when business is slow and allows us to expand
quickly to meet the changing demands of the market.”
