Jiffy introduces European peat substrates to Canadian market

October 2, 2020  By Greenhouse Canada

Jiffy is introducing European peat substrates to the U.S. and Canada. The supplier now offers 26 different mixes formulated to fit different crops.

Many Canadian growers currently use Canadian-sourced peat. Comparing the two, Jiffy says European peat tends to be:

  • Softer and spongier
  • Delivered wetter as it holds more water
  • Less dusty
  • Diverse in structure with coarse options available:  longer fibers of milled peat to hard nuggets from block peat
  • Block peat has more stable structure

European peat is harvested in milled peat and block harvested fractions, as well as longer fiber types, offering the optimal combination of moisture-holding capacity and porosity for all pot sizes and crop types.

Choosing the right substrate can help give plants a great start. The new range includes specialist mixes for annuals, vegetables, potted plants, soft fruits, and cannabis.

Jiffy uses sustainable resources and bio-based materials such as peat, coconut coir and pulp. This peat and Jiffy’s unique manufacturing methods area said to allow a decrease in irrigation intervals.

Located in Treffex Pärnumaa, Estonia and Zwijndrecht, Netherlands, their two European manufacturing sites follow RHP guidelines for harvesting and processing substrates
