Bonzi a long-established industry performer

July 24, 2008 — Since it was first labelled for use on ornamentals in 1982, Bonzi plant growth regulator (PGR) from Syngenta Professional Products has long been regarded as one of the leading PGRs throughout the nursery and greenhouse industries. Through the years, Bonzi has been shown to consistently keep plants uniformly compact, hardy and well proportioned.
Research by universities during the past 26 years – such as the Poinsettia Height Control program conducted by the University of Florida – has shown that implementing a program that includes regular applications of Bonzi to such labour-intensive crops as poinsettias, helps produce plants with enhanced appearance, better blooming, improved shipping characteristics, and shelf life. Additionally, because it slows vertical growth within three to five days after application, it can help reduce associated labour and fertilizer costs, and maximize plant production consistency.
“The introduction of Bonzi represented a milestone for the nursery and greenhouse industries. With it, growers are able to produce compact, beautifully strong plants at the time of shipping,” said Eduardo Moreira, ornamental market manager for Syngenta Professional Products. “Bonzi is still the standard by which other PGRs are measured. This is because no other similar product available today has the proven performance track record of Bonzi, and no other PGR manufacturer offers the kind of after-the-sale support that Syngenta does. Bonzi is truly an exceptional product and has earned its reputation as the 'go-to' PGR for many growers.”

HOW BONZI WORKS
• Paclobrutrazol, the active ingredient in Bonzi, is absorbed primarily by the stems and roots of the plant, moving upward through the xylem to the terminals where it slows the production of gibberellic acid (GA1), a plant hormone that produces cell elongation.
When used at the appropriate application rate, it can reduce vertical growth by as much as 75 per cent for up to four weeks. Syngenta continually researches key application rates for Bonzi in new ornamental plants to help growers ensure optimal production results.
Depending on the crop and the results a grower is trying to achieve, Bonzi can be used as a spray or as a drench.
It aids in the stimulation and growth of roots, which helps improve plant density, quality and durability.
Other features and benefits of Bonzi use include:
Better drought tolerance.
Lower use rate requirements when applied as a drench.
Production at the right moment, extension of the selling window and increasing revenues.
Control of the size and the labour needed in the care of spring vegetative crops and vigorous seed crops like petunias.
Thickening of stems of perennials and more tolerance of shipping stress.
