Crop Culture
March April 2017 – Writing about root zones for greenhouse crops has been an important subject for me and I have written a number of articles on this subject in Greenhouse Canada.
January 2017 – Since most farmers start the growing season in December and January, the space at propagators is limited. Up to 48 heads per square metre spacing is not an exception. This results, in most cases, in a vegetative plant with a few tiny hairy roots.
Nov. 2, 2016, Whitby, Ont. – NOA Fisheries is hosting a three-day aquaponics course early next week (Nov 7-9).
October 2016 – A deleafing robot cleaned up the top award at this year’s GreenTech Show held in mid-June in Amsterdam.
August 2016 – You were first introduced to two Premier’s Award winners in our February issue in the cover story on urban agriculture.
A grower recently sent me a pair of photos (1 and 2) of tomato plants.
Root zone management. Hmmm. Quick “Google” to see what’s out there. Oh. Apparently, the “Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) is responsible for management of the DNS [Domain Name System] root zone. This role means assigning the operators of top-level domains, such as ‘.uk’ and ‘.com,’ and maintaining their technical and administrative details.”1 So, root zone management is a bigger topic than first thought!
Do plants have a language that we can learn to understand?
GrowTrucks, LLC, the container farm division of Indoor Farms of America – maker of unique vertical aeroponic indoor farm equipment – has begun sales of its container farm using the latest patented technology in indoor agriculture.
March 10, 2016 — Coleus downy mildew can cause leaf spots, necrotic lesions, leaf twisting, leaf drop, and/or stunt. Management options include using less susceptible cultivars, good air movement, low humidity, and fungicides.
March 2016 — Teach a village how to garden and it will prosper for a lifetime. That’s our aim at Vita Gardens.
Feb. 25, 2016 — Scouting plug trays before use is critical to preventing financial losses down the production line.
Feb. 5, 2016, Frankfurt, Germany – In contrast to animals, plants form new organs throughout their entire life, i.e., roots, branches, flowers and fruits.
Nov. 23, 2015, Raleigh, NC – Christmas cacti are sensitive to low substrate pH conditions, which can lead to phylloclade chlorotic blotches and necrosis.
December 2015 — I have decided to write about the powdery mildews (PM) this month because I found very serious infections earlier this year both on tomatoes and cucumbers. As the name suggests, most growers recognize the symptoms easily by observing white, powdery stuff on the upper surface of leaves. The pictures accompanying this article adequately describe the symptoms.
