If you are one of the more than 7,000 Ontario Greenbelt farmers, a new program is being rolled out just for you. The Ontario Soil and Crop Improvement Association (OSCIA) in conjunction with the Friends of the Greenbelt Foundation are working together to promote innovative, economic farming practices that will support the environment.

With $150,000 in grants available, this pilot program will build on the Environmental Farm Plan program, assisting local farmers to adopt energy-efficiency technologies. Beginning in April, if you plan on updating or installing new equipment for thermostats, HVAC controls, lighting, heating or cooling recovery equipment, then this is a program your farm should take advantage of. The new program is called Farming Power-Green Energy Innovation in the Greenbelt.

Proposals will be scored based on environmental outcomes. Those with the greatest energy savings will receive larger shares of the incentive. This program has been designed to encourage “management practices that lead to more sustainable and profitable farms,” says Joan McKinlay, the OSCIA president.

The OSCIA will be making applications for this program available in April of this year.
