North American suppliers are warning people to buy what they need earlier instead of waiting for the May long weekend.

The shortage is being blamed on a poor growing season last year and increased interest in people growing their own vegetables for home use and to sell.

The trend of people trying to eat more food produced within 100 miles of where they live has also increased demand for seeds.
