The 2008 Late Spring Gardening Trends Research Report by the Garden Writers Association Foundation reveals what's on gardeners minds as they dive into the planting season.

The survey produced the following findings:

  • When it comes to the environmental impact of gardening products they use, the survey found that 68 per cent of households were very concerned and 34 per cent were somewhat concerned
  • 48 per cent say they always recycle plastic nursery pots and trays, 48 per cent mulch or compost grass clippings, 41 per cent mulch or compost waste
  • 48 per cent of households are planning to focus on weed control with their lawns while 32 per cent will work on insect control
  • 33 per cent say the main reason they garden is for improved mental health, nutrition or fitness
  • 41 per cent of gardeners plan to add more perennials, an increase from 31 per cent in 2005
  • 23 per cent of respondents reported that they read blogs of all types, while 27 per cent said they read garden-related blogs – five per cent check these garden blogs frequently while 22 per cent browse them occasionally
  • 31 per cent planned to fertilize their lawns this spring, 28 per cent will work in manure and compost, 25 per cent will use store-bought soil mix and 14 per cent said they plan to use peat moss
