A Salinas, Calif., man was sentenced to 180 days in jail after being convicted of felony manslaughter in the death of a garden centre employee.

According to the Monterey County Herald, 50-year-old Alfonso Tapia was killed February 17, 2005, when the brakes failed on the company truck he was operating.  The California District Attorney’s Office filed criminal charges after an investigation into the crash revealed that Jeffrey Nilson, a managing partner at the Bokay Garden Centre and Nursery, knew problems existed with the truck’s brakes but failed to fix them.

Nilson pleaded no contest to the charge while in court February.
