Each year, the Canadian Farm Business Management Council (CFBMC) holds its Excellence Award for Agricultural Students Contest. It is designed to help students develop their communication skills by voicing opinions on a subject related to farm business management. Three winners are awarded a $1,000 cash prize to help them further their education in agriculture.

The program continues to be a popular means of connecting with the next generation of professional farm managers while challenging them to reflect on the important issues facing the industry.

This year, students are asked to submit videos responding to the following question:

“As a future farm manager, how will you balance the environmental stewardship necessary for the safeguarding of our water, air and soil with the need to be productive and competitive in a global economy?”

The winning videos will be posted and archived on CFBMC’s official website. Videos should be three to five minutes in length. Applicants must be at least 16 years of age as of Dec. 31, 2010 and be enrolled in a field related to agriculture or agri-food at a recognized post-secondary educational institution. All applications must be received no later than March 31, 2011.

More information and the online application form are on www.farmcentre.com. Students who wish to obtain information about other awards and scholarships can also access CFBMC’s bilingual directory of agriculture scholarships.
