Canadian cannabis producer Flowr and Hawthorne Gardening Company (subsidiary of the Scotts Miracle-Gro Company) have announced an R&D partnership, building the first facility in North America dedicated to cannabis research and development.
The 50,000 square-foot facility will be built in Kelowna, BC, complete with labs, indoor and greenhouse growing areas, plus genetic breeding space – all in one building. Construction is slated to begin this year, and the facility is expected to be ready next year.
Scientists from both organizations will be collaborating on nutrient fomulations, lighting, environmental systems, irrigation, growing media, as well as integrated cultivation systems supporting Hawthorne brands (Botanicare, Gavita, General Hydroponics, Can-Filters). According to the release, cultivars will be developed for specific growing conditions and therapeutic uses.
