July 31, 2018  By Greenhouse Canada

The speaker line-up for 2018’s Farwest Show includes speakers on biological pest control and advanced spray technology.

Kelly Vance, integrated pest management (IPM) specialist with Beneficial Insectary, will share his expertise on the biological control of broad, russet and cyclamen mites. His session will include identifying potential damage, their basic biology, cover inspection and quarantine of incoming plant material, scouting crops for early warning signs and biological control programs focusing on prevention.

Robin Rosetta, associate professor with Oregon State University Extension, will explore intelligent spray systems that can reduce pesticide use by more than 50 per cent while achieving the same level of control of insects and diseases. Rosetta will also look at spray systems technology under development.

Organized by the Oregon Association of Nurseries, the 2018 Farwest Show will be held August 22 to 24 at the Oregon Convention Center in Portland, Oregon.

According to organizers, the Farwest show has a strong Canadian presence.

“Last year over 150 Canadians attended the Farwest Show from all over Canada including British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec and even as far away as Prince Edward Island,” says Allan Niemi, director of events at the OAN. “We average over 15 exhibitors from Canada each year including growers, agriculture product suppliers, high-tech software solutions, and nursery and greenhouse equipment providers.”

“Canada has always been an important market and product provider for the U.S. and especially our growers in the western states,” Niemi adds. “We look forward to another great showing from our Canadian counterparts to continue to grow business relations.”
