Fafard receives VeriFlora certification

In 2009, the horticultural peat industry, via the Créneau Valorisation de la tourbe et des technologies agro-environnementales (VTTA) and associations from this sector (CSPMA and APTHQ), started a process for developing specifications related to the responsible management of peatlands. The development work was assigned to an independent certification agency, Scientific Certification Systems (SCS), who audits several types of sustainability certification for the horticulture, floriculture, agriculture, agroprocessing and forestry industries.
The certification criteria for the peat moss sector are now part of the VeriFlora standard, an ecolabel for the production of potted plants and cut flowers that is recognized in the United States as the goldstandard in sustainability.
After several months of work and validation with stakeholders through public consultations, SCS developed criteria guaranteeing that certified peat moss producers manage all of their operations in an environmentally responsible manner. The certification criteria, based in part on the ISO 9001 (Quality management systems) and ISO 14001 (Environmental management systems) standards, encompass environmental protection, social engagement and product quality.

Being the first company to be certified under this ecolabel is very significant considering all the efforts and strict requirements that need to be achieved to obtain this certification. “We are particularly proud to receive this certification, as it represents the sum of our work as a team and of the efforts put by every one of us. It’s a nice recognition of our company’s culture and values,” says Fafard et Frères CEO Martin Fafard.

Rivière-du-Loup, 17 Novembre 2010. L’Association des producteurs de tourbe horticole du Québec (APTHQ) est fière d’annoncer que l’un de ses membres, Fafard et Frères , est la toute première entreprise à travers le monde certifiée VeriFlora pour la gestion responsable des tourbières.
En 2009, l’industrie de la tourbe horticole, via le créneau Valorisation de la tourbe et des technologies agro environnementales et les regroupements associatifs de son secteur (CSPMA et APTHQ), a débuté un travail de concertation afin de faire développer un cahier de charge en gestion responsable adapté aux tourbières. Les travaux d’élaboration ont été confiés à une agence de certification indépendante, Scientific Certification Systems (SCS), auditeur pour plusieurs types de certification en développement durable dans les domaines de l’horticulture, la floriculture, l’agriculture, l’agroalimentaire et la foresterie. Les critères de certification pour le secteur de la tourbe font maintenant partie de la norme VeriFlora, écolabel pour la production de plantes en pot et de fleurs coupées reconnue aux États-Unis comme étant la norme d’excellence en développement durable.
Après plusieurs mois de travail et de validation avec des parties prenantes effectuées par consultations publiques, SCS a rédigé des critères assurant que les producteurs de tourbe certifiés effectuent de façon responsable la gestion de l’ensemble de leurs opérations. Les critères de certification, basés en partie sur les normes ISO 9 001 (système de gestion de la qualité) et ISO 14 001 (système de gestion environnementale), englobent la protection de l’environnement, l’engagement social et la qualité des produits.
