Self-powering algal greenhouse

A pilot project at a commercial greenhouse in Ohio is using several innovative ways to achieve energy self-sufficiency.

New technologies are being employed to turn algae grown in the greenhouse into several high-value products. After the oils are extracted from the algae for use in producing biodiesel, the residual algae biomass will enter an anaerobic digestion process. The products of this process will produce biogas and a nutrient-rich liquid that can be returned to the algal ponds as fertilizer.

The project is headed by Touchstone Research Laboratory. The company is collaborating with the US Department of Energy’s National Energy Technology Laboratory, as well as several other academic and private partners.
