The second stage of a greenhouse project in the Tomsk Region of Russia includes 6 hectares of greenhouse space and the construction of a 4.5 MW ‘thermal energy centre.’

Ontario electricity consumers are in for a bit of shock this month. When growers and businesses alike receive their July bills in August, it will be higher than most are anticipating, says Lisa Brodeur of 360 Energy.

Carbon Harvest has received a loan to finish its landfill gas-to-energy plant in Battlebro, Vermont with a greenhouse and aquaculture facility.

Energy will be a focus as the Premiers meet this week in Halifax, a meeting which may involve the first steps in creating a nation-wide energy policy. "Talks on energy will certainly be headed up by Alberta Premier Alison Redford, who has been pushing a Canadian-wide energy strategy since her election earlier this year," says 360 Energy's Lisa Brodeur.

A greenhouse integrating food production, algae production for bio-diesel, and aquaculture has just opened in Minnesota, as part of the Silver Bay Eco-Industrial Business Park. The University of Minnesota is a project partner.

"We are fortunate in Canada to have an abundance of energy right across the country - so abundant that 'big picture' energy planning has never had to be consistent across the nation," says 360 Energy's Lisa Brodeur.
While many jurisdictions - including Ontario - are beginning to move away from coal for electricity generation, Saskatchewan has signed an agreement to do continue using it, notes Lisa Brodeur of 360 Energy.
Many views are being shared with respect to natural gas markets, says Michelle Vieira from Ag Energy Co-operative in Guelph, Ontario. "Several views are on the 'bearish' side, believing lower prices will continue. However, some factors point in the other direction."

New Canadian carbon capture technology offers an all-in-one solution that helps greenhouse growers greatly reduce fuel and energy costs. Read the feature story involving the perspective of a BC greenhouse operator.

For the first time in several weeks, we are seeing natural gas prices begin to climb. We continue to see spot pricing remain under $2 CDN/GJ, but rising nonetheless. While some analysts are saying a bottom has been reached...

Canadian natural gas prices could be poised for a recovery, and natural gas prices in the US increased by nearly five per cent on Monday April 30.

The global gas glut shows no signs of lessening as the industry moves into 2012, even as gas usage continues to climb, according to an article on U.S. inventories at the end of the first quarter are projected to hit levels not seen in more than 20 years.
For those operatng in Union Gas territory, there are incentive programs available to help growers identify natural gas savings.

According to the utility, energy efficiency studies and surveys can identify and prioritize energy saving opportunities for your greenhouse. They will also go a long way toward determining your energy priorities and identifying what actions will save you the most money, prioritizing your limited investment funds and project management time.

Successful programs have been instrumental in freeing up dollars and improving bottom line performance in the past, Union Gas says, adding that it provides funding for both process and energy efficiency studies and surveys. Options include:

Process studies

Steam trap surveys

Energy efficiency feasibility studies

Greenhouse Canada's 2012 survey asked growers a host of questions, from crops to pests. We also asked which input costs rose the most in recent years, as well as what they were using for primary heating fuels. The results may surprise you, but probably not.
As the chart to right may still show, natural gas prices and futures continue to slide. In fact, natural gas futures fell below $2 for the first time since January 2002, as weak demand and robust production have driven prices down 55% over the past year.
