First SMARTFERM dry anaerobic digester in U.S.

The first dry anaerobic digester utilizing SMARTFERM technology to turn organic waste into electricity and high-quality agricultural compost has launched in the United States.

The digester, which represents a joint project by the Monterey Regional Waste Management District (MRWMD) in Monterey, Calif., and Zero Waste Energy, LLC, was launched in response to the community’s demands for a more sustainable use for the local hospitality industry’s organic waste.

According to a press release issued by Zero Waste Energy:

 

“The SMARTFERM at the MRWMD is equipped to process up to 5,000 tons per year, creating 100kW of electricity or up to 3,200 BTU/ton of biogas with a 58 to 60 per cent methane content.”

 

SMARTFERM’s 21-day batch processing technology is semi-mobile, space efficient, prefabricated and scalable up to 30,000 tons of waste per year. The processing system represents a new generation of organic waste management strategies to maximize energy and compost production.

 

Zero Waste Energy is a global project developer using patented anaerobic digestion technology to design, build and operate integrated solid waste facilities that optimize water diversion and generate renewable energy.
