June 13, 2014, Toronto – Toronto’s vibrant shipping container market, Market 707, has just added an exciting new element.

Joining the existing array of shipping containers, retrofitted into retail units that sell everything from fusion street food to party supplies, this newest addition shows off one more thing these recycled bins can do – they can improve food access and foster locally grown food for Alexandra Park residents.

The new greenhouse was built and donated by Giant Container Services after Giant Container Services vice-president Daniel Kroft fell in love with the way Market 707 has used shipping containers to transform Dundas Street West.

“When you see people at Scadding Court working so proactively and having such a positive impact on the community it has a snowball effect, and you end up asking yourself, ‘what can you do to help,’” Kroft explains.

“So, we challenged our team to create something. And we think they’ve delivered. There are a lot of applications for containers but this is one that is especially worthwhile to our entire team.”

Appropriately launching as part of Scadding Court Community Centre’s Seedy Saturday event, this greenhouse arrived just in time for spring to support Scadding Court’s 150 community garden plots and the initiatives of Friends of Alexandra Park.
