It’s hard to find another segment of the horticultural industry that has diversified as much as cut flower growers have. The varieties of cuts now available are truly astounding and each season brings with it more new offerings ranging from forsythia, spring tree blossoms of peaches, nectarines, ornamental flowering cherries and quince, to new summer colours of dahlias, asters and celosias.

Dec. 31, 2015 — Since the introduction of the Invincibelle Spirit® hydrangea in 2009, sales from this special plant have raised funds for The Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
Dec. 24, 2015 – The Perennial Plant Association members nominate a slate of perennials every year and vote to select the Perennial Plant of the Year. Anemone x hybrida ‘Honorine Jobert’ is the 2016 winner.
December 2015 — The ornamental container trial held at Vineland Research and Innovation Centre has been jointly run by OMAFRA and Department of Plant Agriculture (UofG) since the spring of 2007. Breeders and plant suppliers have the opportunity to enter new plant hopefuls into this trial for evaluation under Ontario growing conditions. Evaluation takes place during greenhouse production and outside in containers or ground beds for the balance of the summer’s growing season.
December 2015 — The first ever Ontario Container Trial and Workshop attracted over 30 growers and consultants to Vineland to see new ornamental varieties and hear presentations from floriculture research experts.
Nov. 5, 2015, Downers Grove, IL — Anyone watching the movements of All-America Selections lately will notice an ever-increasing number of exciting and wonderful plants that are being named AAS Winners.
The weather early on this year was great for the Sawaya Garden Trials (just east of Simcoe, Ont.), and this was reflected in the quality of most varieties. We had cool nights (but not too cold!) and warm days (but not too warm!) providing excellent weather conditions for the plants to establish.

The California Spring Trials, (what I call the California Showcase) is very interesting in the sense that you feel it is something you must attend. After the tour, you have a sense of “variety overload” with all the excitement in wanting to trial many of the varieties you saw.

June 2015 – Gypsophila (also known as Baby’s Breath) is characterized by an abundance of flowers, most often white and petite. It blooms naturally in summer, when days are long. Gypsophila flowers are to be found among the 10 leading crops in the Dutch auctions’ sales. It is often used as a filler in the bouquet industry, but it can also be arranged in a vase alone without additional flowers.
