Major awards for Proven Winners shrubs

November 11, 2016  By Dave Harrison

Nov. 11, 2016 – Proven Winners® ColorChoice® Flowering Shrubs have received Direct Gardening Association (DGA) awards for Purple Pillar™ Rose of Sharon hibiscus and Invincibelle® Ruby hydrangea.

The annual Green Thumb award winners are chosen by an independent panel of garden writers and editors. The winning products were selected based on their uniqueness, technological innovation, ability to solve a gardening problem or provide a gardening opportunity, and potential appeal to gardeners.

• ‘Purple Pillar’ is a totally unique Rose of Sharon, growing naturally as a narrow column instead of a wide, spreading plant. It gets to be just 2-3′ wide and 10-16′ tall making it ideal for screens, hedges, patio containers. Like most all hibiscus, it will do best in full sun and is hardy to USDA Zone 5.

• The dark burgundy red flower buds of Invincibelle® Ruby hydrangea open to a two-toned combination of bright ruby red and silvery pink. The foliage is extra dark and stems are strong, making this new hydrangea a gem in any garden. It is a strong rebloomer that will be an excellent addition to any garden. Like other smooth hydrangeas, it flowers on new growth and so blooms every year without fail.

These new varieties and several other new introductions will be available at garden centres in spring of 2017.

To date, Proven Winners® ColorChoice® Flowering Shrubs have received over 170 awards, making it the most decorated line of woody plants in the industry.
