Aug. 10, 2012, Milton, ON — Garden centres collected an estimated 91,229 pounds of plastic during the Canadian Nursery Landscape Association’s National Plastics Recycling Event.

Fifty-six garden centres in eight provinces participated this year, acting as drop-off points for their community’s used garden pots and trays. Overall, this year’s event marked a 40 per cent increase in participation and plastics collected.

“The CNLA would like to extend a huge thank you to all participating member garden centres [that] put in the extra effort to make this year’s event so successful – a lot of work goes into saving over 90,000 pounds of plastic from the landfill,” read a CNLA press release.

This year marked the third year of the program, which launched in 2010 with six garden centres. That first year, 53,000 pounds of plastic were collected. The following year, over 40 garden centres participated, collecting 63,150 pounds of plastic.

The National Plastics Recycling Event is scheduled to return again in 2013. Recyclers who can offer free pick-ups of unsorted garden and agricultural plastics and garden retailers who wish to participate are invited to contact the CNLA for more information.
