Job Summary:
The role of the Commercial Greenhouse Manager is a full-time year round position with the exception of some mandatory time off in the month of January. The role of this manager is to work in union with the Assistant to Commercial Grower to maintain the effectiveness and efficiency of its staff of between 3 – 15 personnel in its daily operations towards upholding the Shelmerdine standard of cleanliness, organization, and production of the highest quality plant material. The job is that of a floor manager which is physically requiring. Very little clerical and desk work is needed however some is required.

Responsibilities:
Scheduling
You will be responsible for making decisions such as to when to send staff home early, or extend shifts when required to ensure the proper schedule is maintained in the production of the crops. Although a schedule of Monday – Friday 8am – 4:30pm is historic and the normal, early mornings, late evenings, weekends and night shifts are required from time to time as dictated by the requirements of the facility and the production of crops.

Crops
The specific crops that you will be responsible for are as follows but not limited to; Hanging Baskets(qty 3500, Annuals (qty 100,000), Patio Tropical Plants (4 truckloads per year), Chrysanthemums (qty 1500), and Poinsettias (qty 9000).

IPM
Integrated Pest Management is an essential component in the production of our ornamental crops. Responsibilities in this area require a valid Commercial Pesticide Applicators License. A comprehensive written plan and log is required for each crop and range of greenhouses for each crop cycle. Actions to prevent and correct are fundamental.

Building and Facility
Building and facility maintenance pertaining to commercial and retail greenhouse components and technologies are a significant part of this role. You will be responsible for the general maintenance and repairs to features but not limited to; venting, heating, cooling, and irrigation.

Purchasing
You will be required to place orders for items for your department such as fungicide, pesticides and everyday items needed to perform the work required. Purchases will require the approval of an owner.

Daily Duties
This includes but is not limited to the following:
– Upholding the greenhouse appearance in your department and outlying areas of your department
– Providing your staff with a list of daily duties and following through to ensure that tasks are completed to your satisfaction
– Maintaining a positive staff morale by encouraging and rewarding good work

Hiring and Training
You will be involved in the hiring process of new staff. You will be responsible for the proper training of new staff.

Attending Management Meetings
Management meetings are held weekly. At these informal meetings you will be expected to communicate the recent goings-on of each department, seasonal changes, ideas for improvement, etc.

Climate Control
You will be required to monitor and maintain the greenhouse climate. You will be added to the climate control monitoring system.
