An innovative P.E.I. hobbyist
Growing a variety of grapes, cucumbers, tomatoes and even kiwi in a partially underground greenhouse is more of a hobby than a business for Laurie Bell of Huntley, Prince Edward Island.
Energy remains a hot topic in the industry. Ontario greenhouse growers have increasingly been working co-operatively over the past 23 years to rein in energy costs by negotiating more favourable rates and researching conservation technologies.
Automation, innovation and an internationally acclaimed show garden were showcased in the Floriculture Bus Tour during last fall’s CanWest Show in British Columbia.
For three of the four nurseries on the Mountains & Meadows Nursery Tour of the Canwest Hort Show, greenhouses were only part of much larger operations.

The biggest salad-growing greenhouses in the U.K., covering an area the size of 39 football pitches, have opened.
Fafard and Nutrite have developed a new commercial partnership. The arrangement was highlighted at Fafard’s recent open house, which attracted more than 300 customers.
Located in Thunder Bay, Ont., Vanderwees Home & Garden has become a year-round destination centre where people can come for much more than just plants and gardening expertise. In addition to the garden centre, Vanderwees Home & Garden offers customers a garden café, furniture, patio and leisure accessories, a gift shop, an animal farm, seminars and workshops.
As Richard Keehn walks the aisles of his small greenhouse, pointing to a Venus Fly Trap here, a Sarracenia there, it’s easy to get caught up in his enthusiasm for his plants and for the new career he’s built himself.

'Pillar of the Industry' honoured
Martin Desrochers, of Hydroserre Mirabel, was recently honoured with the 2008 Pillar of the Industry award by the Québec Produce Marketing Association. The award recognizes his involvement not only in the QPMA, but also in the Canadian Produce Marketing Association (CPMA) and the Fruit and Vegetable Dispute Resolution Corporation (DRC).
The growing number of foreign workers on British Columbia farms is spurring the industry to focus on best practices for managing this important component of the province’s agricultural work force.

Scientists studying climate change in northern Canada have recently used satellite photos to document a “greening” effect. That is, they’re finding vegetation above the treeline is growing lusher and greener earlier than usual. They’re suggesting this green wave will last longer than in the past, thanks to warmer temperatures.
