Although they don’t know each other, Pat and Cammie Wohlgemuth and Murray and Lisa Warkentin have much in common. Both couples have had experience doing missionary work for their Mennonite community in Third World countries, and both returned afterwards to the same rural southern Manitoba region with the idea of operating their own commercial hydroponic greenhouse.  
Last year was indeed cause for celebration for Central Alberta Greenhouses, as the family-owned business celebrated 75 years in business.  That certainly makes it one of the oldest, if not the oldest, operating greenhouse operation in the province. And if that’s not distinction enough, at eight acres it’s probably the largest greenhouse operation between British Columbia and Ontario.
Dutch perennial growers, exporters and the Naktuinbouw, the Dutch quality inspection service for horticulture are in the process improving the quality of Hosta production in order to solve the problems related to Hosta Virus X.


To maintain plant health, Ben uses Plant Grow from Laguna, which is safe for fish and will not affect water quality.
I had the good fortune of first meeting Lois Hole, whom I always called “Lois” at her insistence, even when she became Lieutenant-Governor of Alberta, in May 1979 when I was a rookie greenhouse specialist.
