Blog offers expert information about soil

April 27, 2014  By Canadian Garden Centre & Nursery

Apr. 28, 2014, Madison, WI — The Soil Science Society of America has created a blog to help the public understand a precious natural resource.

Recent topics covered by the Soils Matter blog have included tips about soil testing, how the harsh winter might affect this summer's growing season, and whether synthetic or natural fertilizers are the best plant nutrients.

"We know that many people are interested in soils," said Jan Hopmans, president of SSSA. "We wanted to create a blog so our members can communicate real soil information and answer questions."

The blog can be found at www.soilsmatter.wordpress.com. It is currently averaging about 2,500 page views per month.

"Naturally, soil scientists find soils interesting, but we want to help people understand that soils are so much more than dirt. The air people breathe, food they eat, water they drink, clothes they wear and places they live, all depend on the soil," said Clay Robinson, a regular Soils Matter contributor. "Soil scientists can help people learn how to use soil wisely, balancing conservation and productivity, so future generations can benefit from the soil as we do."

SSSA also has public information about soils on their www.soils.org website, under the tab "discover soils."

The Soil Science Society of America is an international scientific society that fosters the transfer of knowledge and practices to sustain global soils.
