Ball makes sustainable sourcing simple

August 5, 2009  By Amanda Ryder

Aug. 5, 2009 – Ball Horticultural Company is launching a new program to promote its suppliers who have earned independent third party environmental certification, such as Veriflora and USDA Organic.

Ball Horticultural Company is launching a new program to promote its suppliers who have earned independent third party environmental certification, such as Veriflora and USDA Organic. Certified EcoSource by Ball is a program that gives Ball customers the option of buying unrooted cuttings, plugs and liners from a special group of certified suppliers. Each of the 11 suppliers has demonstrated dedication to providing quality plants that are grown using earth-friendly practices. Ball is the first to offer a complete Certified Sustainable Supply Chain within the horticulture industry.

“During the past couple of years, several suppliers in North America have become certified, but Ball is the first to offer a complete sustainable supply chain,” says Kevin Roethle, Senior Supply Manager for Ball Horticultural Company. “The Certified EcoSource program allows customers to partner with industry-leading suppliers who share similar sustainable values. As additional Ball vendors earn environmental certifications, we’ll add them to our resource list.”

“The interest in sustainability in the U.S. is remarkable and still growing,” says Bill Kluth of Tagawa Greenhouses, which earned Veriflora certification in January 2009 and is listed as a Certified EcoSource supplier. “Being certified sustainable recommits us to our company’s core values by reinforcing our existing programs.”

With consumer demand for sustainable products building, Ball believes that increasing numbers of its wholesale customers will seek to improve the eco-status of their businesses as well as the products they produce by purchasing their growing inputs from certified suppliers.

Ball offers grower and retailer customers an ever-expanding list of sustainable practices, programs and products that are environmentally friendly alternatives to current practices.
