Jewett City Greenhouses & Florist in Jewett City, Connecticut has received an $18,000 grant through the US Department of Agriculture’s ‘Rural Energy for America Program’ as well as a grant from the State of Connecticut to improve its energy efficiency.

Owner Louis Demicco says he is using the grant to replace the glass on two of his greenhouses with double-wall polycarbonate sheets and will add heat curtains in third greenhouse.

“We will complete the project in phases,” he told Energy Edge. “The polycarbonate will eliminate the leaks.” The greenhouses will therefore need less boiler oil for heating in winter.
