AgTech Breakthrough awards handed out to 2021 innovators

August 20, 2021  By Greenhouse Canada

Winners of the annual AgTech Breakthrough Awards program were announced this week, and horticultural technology suppliers were among the winning roster.

Now in its second year, the award program is organized by AgTech Breakthrough, a market intelligence organization that recognizes the companies, technologies and products in the global agricultural and food technology markets. This includes Internet-of-Things (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) based agricultural technologies, farm management, indoor farming, food quality, data analytics and many more.

This year’s program attracted more than 1,500 nominations from over 15 different countries throughout the world.

“This awards program recognizes the very best of new innovators and disruptors who are addressing the biggest challenges in the global agricultural ecosystem today. Congratulations to each and everyone one of our 2021 AgTech Breakthrough Award winners,” said Bryan Vaughn, managing director, AgTech Breakthrough.

Among the winners was B.C.-based CubicFarm Systems Corp. who was named ‘Overall Indoor Farming Solution Provider of the Year.’

“CubicFarms technologies can significantly improve independent access to quality food and maximize crop yield all while reducing the environmental cost of food and feed production in a meaningful way. We are so pleased to present CubicFarms with the highly competitive ‘Overall Indoor Farming Solution Provider of the Year’ award for 2021. CubicFarms is truly changing the world one innovation at a time,’ said Vaughn.

Seattle-based iUNU, who is also active in the Canadian horticultural sector, was named ‘AI-based AgTech Solution of the Year.’

“The average age of a grower is 57 and as they retire, their institutional knowledge will leave with them. Crop recipes, environmental data, germination rates, pest & pathogen control, and phenotyping – there’s no central database of information,” said Vaughn. “No company has developed a more comprehensive platform using computer vision with as extensive a data library as iUNU. LUNA from iUNU is an absolute game changer. Congratulations on being 2021’s ‘AI-based AgTech Solution of the Year.’”

Nominees were evaluated by an independent panel of experts within the AgTech industry, with the winning products and companies selected based on a variety of criteria, including Innovation, Performance, Ease of Use, Functionality, Value, and Impact.

“Agriculture as we know it is being transformed. This new era, revolutionized through digitization, automation and machine learning, is having a profound impact across the entire agricultural ecosystem. Technological innovation in the space is improving the full spectrum of operations and processes, empowering farmers to grow more sustainably while providing greater opportunities to address pressing issues the whole world is facing – from increasing overall farm activity to reducing greenhouse gas emissions,” said Vaughn.
