customers, say store officials!

“Merchandising is something that we are trying to improve on and finding
the time is not always easy,” explains Darlene Den Haan. “However, our staff
has proven to be a great source of creativity, as evidenced by the Fathers’ Day
display.”

Den Haan’s is a family owned, four-acre commercial greenhouse operation in
the Annapolis Valley. In business since 1963, it has evolved from strictly
greenhouse veggies to include a full-service garden centre and gift shop. It is
open year-round and draws customers from as far away as New Brunswick and
Prince Edward Island.

Den Haan’s employs 11 full-time staff and 24 seasonal workers. “We are
known for our tomatoes that are sold to Loblaw stores and local farm markets
throughout the Maritimes,” says Darlene, “and of course from our own garden
centre.”

This year “started off with a bang with gorgeous weather and strong sales
early on,” however it slowed around the third week of May,” says Darlene.

“Our
traffic has been good but the average sale is down from last year. The consumer
is being cautious but that’s okay because so are we.”
