2019 Poinsettia trials: What to expect

November 5, 2019  By Greenhouse Canada

The poinsettia trials open house is back. Scheduled for November 19, 2019, the trials will feature over 120 varieties, as well as a speakers program with a heavy focus on pest control.

Mel Sawaya, organizer and greenhouse consultant at Focus Greenhouse Management, says even after 42 years spent working in the sector, he still looks forward to learning about what growers should or shouldn’t do with their poinsettia crop.

Speakers include Kevin Rogoza and Emma Johnston of Jeffery’s Greenhouses, Dr. Rose Buitenhuis of Vineland Research and Innovation Centre, Dr. Sarah Jandricic of OMAFRA, Mike Short of Eco Habitat Agri Services, and Harvey Lang from Syngenta.

Some questions that will be answered during the education-filled day include whether B-Nine timing delays flowering, the science behind biocontrol, and how to make biocontrol practices more cost-effective.

Sawaya challenges growers to come check their knowledge and learn about symptoms caused by diseases and incorrect practices, so they can avoid these problems in their own production.

Poinsettia breeders, including Dümmen Orange, SelectaOne, Beekenkamp, and Syngenta will also be sharing their latest, most promising varieties.
