Sept. 1, 2015, Guelph, Ont. — Are LED technologies ready to be applied in greenhouse crop production? This question has been frequently asked over the past decade.

Our free Sept. 17 webinar at 2 p.m. (Eastern) will help answer that question.

As little as five years ago the answer to that question, from most of the experts, was “LEDs are not going to be ready for greenhouse crop production for another five years.”

Now that those five years have passed how has the answer to this question changed?

In this webinar, Dr. Youbin Zheng will walk you through the basics of LED technologies, the historical progression of LED development in terms of energy use efficiency and production costs, advantages and disadvantages of LEDs in horticultural applications, examples of current and future LED applications in greenhouse crop production, and some of the latest research initiatives in the world.

Zheng is an associate professor and the Environmental Horticulture Chair of the University of Guelph/Vineland Research and Innovation Centre.

The objectives of his research program are to develop technologies for producing plant materials in a sustainable and environmentally friendly manner, to develop and use horticultural technologies for improving our environment and to help build a sustainable society.

His research program serves the greenhouse floriculture, greenhouse vegetable, nursery, landscape, green roof and urban agriculture industries. His areas of expertise include lighting, plant nutrition, fertilization, irrigation and water treatment, growing substrates, plant-environment interactions, and other horticulture production-related technologies.

Dr. Zheng has more than 20 years experience in horticulture and has published more than 80 peer-reviewed scientific articles.
