Touring the California Spring Trials (Part 3)

April 14, 2016  By Brad McMillan of JVK

April 14, 2016 – This is my third of several California Spring Trials online reports for Greenhouse Canada this week. Please follow these stories throughout the week to see what’s caught my eye.

Terra Nova has been busy with new genetics in coleus for the last few years. This new, very compact plant is called ‘Marakesh.’ It has a low-growing, prostrate habit and won’t overgrow a container or bed, but forms a tidy, sturdy, small mound with nice foliage and muted colour. Terra Nova has several new coleus for 2017, all available through PSI.

Sakata has added a new colour to the terrific Sunpatiens Series – ‘Compact Orchid.’ This is a really bright, eye-catching new colour that helps to fill out the colour palette in the Compact Sunpatiens line. It’s very close to the other Compacts in terms of size, habit and vigour.

Benary Seed has added a new colour to their top-selling line of boliviensis begonia from seed. ‘Santa Barbara’ is a clear white colour, with large flowers, although the overall finished size will be somewhat smaller than the other colours in the series. This is a very heat-tolerant and a full-sun or part-shade plant.

Jaldety has made a new introduction for 2017 in their line of thunbergia. New ‘Sunny Susy Brownie’ features a unique dark red, almost garnet colour. The habit and vigour is the same as Cohen’s other thunbergia.

Petunia ‘Happy Fire Red’ is a brand new addition from Cohen/Brier for 2017. It’s an upright-mounded variety with a slight trail, and has a rich, red colour.
