Sept. 22, 2106, St. Albert, Alta. – This year’s overall Canadian peat harvest has been disappointing, according to a survey of members by the Canadian Sphagnum Peat Moss Association.
CSPMA members represent 95 per cent of the North American peat production.
• In New Brunswick, the industry is slightly below average in its expected harvest volumes (New Brunswick North, 93 per cent, New Brunswick South, 76 per cent). A wet cool summer restricted harvesting.
• The harvest on Québec’s South Shore (89 per cent) is below expectations. However, some producers were able to achieve targeted volumes.
• In Québec’s North Shore (75 per cent) the results are less favorable with no producer achieving their harvest expectations. Harvesting was difficult due to unfavourable weather conditions.
• The Prairie provinces have experienced a poorer harvest primarily due to adverse weather – Manitoba, 83 per cent; Saskatchewan, 70 per cent; and Alberta, 79 per cent.
• Minnesota has experienced a similarly lower than expected harvest with only 84 per cent achieved.
Further adjustments to this release may be made dependent on the ability to harvest in the fall season. The industry had lower carryover inventory volumes from the previous harvest season. As in the past, CSPMA members are committed to working co-operatively with their commercial business partners.
