June 19, 2013, Milton, ON — With a solid foundation now in place, Canada’s Garden Day is looking to return even bigger and better next year.
During Canada’s inaugural Garden Day, held June 14, events were hosted in public gardens, butterfly gardens, historic sites, botanical gardens and other green spaces across the country. Official launch activities for the inaugural Canada’s Garden Day were hosted in Victoria, Regina, Winnipeg, Toronto, Halifax and St. John’s, and several other activities taking place all across the country.
Celebrations also included the giveaway of 1,000 potted flowers at the corner of Yonge and Dundas streets in downtown Toronto, with the generous support of P. Ravensbergen & Sons, PickOntario and Landscape Ontario.
“The first Garden Day came together quickly, but we are really pleased with the response we have had all across Canada,” says Michel Gauthier, a representative of the Canadian Garden Tourism Council. “On social media, at public gardens and even on a street corner in the middle of Canada’s largest urban jungle, we have seen incredible support from Canadians to celebrate the public gardens and green spaces in their communities.”
Organizers are eager to build on the success of this year's event and have announced the second annual Canada's Garden Day will be held on June 13, 2014.
Canada’s Garden Day, presented in partnership with the Canadian Garden Tourism Council (CGTC) and irrigation product and service provider Rain Bird Corporation, seeks to raise awareness about the importance of public and private gardens, the value of home gardening, the benefits of green spaces and the promotion of environmental stewardship and garden tourism.
“We may set aside the Friday before Father’s Day as Canada’s Garden Day, but in all honesty every day can be garden day,” says Gauthier. “Canadians are lucky to have a wealth of public gardens and green spaces in their communities for their enjoyment. Heading out into the garden is a great way to decompress and discover the true nature of a destination.”
