 Sarah Ryall, co-owner of Delta’s Gipaanda Greenhouses, is the recipient of the 2007 Outstanding Resource Women of Honour Awards for Agriculture.
“Women rock! Women are on the front lines of natural resources in British Columbia,” said Delta South MLA Val Roddick in making the presentation. “Sarah Ryall is a perfect example of this.” Ryall was honoured for her dedication in promoting public awareness of the importance of British Columbia’s agriculture industry, encouraging the next generation to consider careers in agriculture, operating her business as an environmentally responsible farm by participating in the Environmental Farm Plan Program, and by managing a well-balanced, culturally diversified work place. She is also actively involved in local organizations such as the DRS Earthwise Society, Delta Farmers’ Institute, BC Greenhouse Growers’ Association, and the BC Agriculture in the Classroom Foundation.
The Women of Resource Communities Conference introduced the Outstanding Resource Women of Honour Awards last year to celebrate the accomplishments of women in the resource communities. The awards recognize candidates who have been leaders in their industry and communities, role models for other women, and mentors for the youths.
Nine women received the honour, including five from the major resource sectors: agriculture, aquaculture, fisheries, forestry, mining, and oil and gas, and three from business, government or non-profit, and a coastal, resource or rural community. Twenty-two women in all were nominated in the nine categories. The 2007 Outstanding Resource Women of Honour Awards for Agriculture was sponsored by the BC Agriculture Council.
