Province Offers Loonie Support
The Ontario greenhouse industry has expressed its appreciation for the government of Ontario decision to provide support to producers in the sector.

“We appreciate the provincial government recognizing the impact that the surge in the value of the Canadian dollar has been having on our export-oriented sector,” said Cole Cacciavillani, chairperson of The Ontario Greenhouse Alliance. “With the onset of cold weather, growers are reminded of the higher energy costs they are facing, among other input cost pressures, leading to lower margins.”

Within the economic statement issued in December, the province announced some $150 million would be provided to Ontario’s livestock and horticultural farmers. Of that amount, $30 million is earmarked specifically for horticulture. The government has also set aside $15 million for other initiatives to contribute to the long-term competitiveness and sustainability of industry sectors, including greenhouses.
