Sept. 14, 2011 — Farm Credit Canada (FCC) launched its eighth annual Drive Away Hunger program to reduce hunger across Canada.
Sept. 14, 2011 — Farm Credit Canada (FCC) launched its eighth annual Drive Away Hunger program to reduce hunger across Canada. Each year, FCC partners with customers, schools, businesses, community groups and rural residents nationwide to support Canadian food banks.
FCC Drive Away Hunger involves driving a tractor and trailer through communities to collect food and cash donations for food banks across the country. One hundred per cent of donations go to Canadian food banks, and anyone can visit www.fccdriveawayhunger.ca to make a cash donation.
“Canadian farmers and agribusiness operators offer some of the world’s safest and highest quality food, and they are coming together to share it with those who need it most,” says Greg Stewart, FCC president and CEO. “Through Drive Away Hunger, we really have an opportunity to make a difference. The program allows FCC to support the communities where our customers and employees live and work.”
This year, FCC Drive Away Hunger program tours will take place the week of October 10 in British Columbia, Manitoba, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Quebec and Regina (FCC Corporate Office location). FCC is also collecting food and cash donations in every field office across Canada from Sept. 19 to Oct. 14 to help reduce hunger nationwide.
Last year, some1.7 million pounds of food was collected.
In 2010, food bank use in small towns and rural areas increased by 13 per cent.
