New gerbera variety has French influence
Written by Dave Harrison
March 18, 2011, Amsterdam, the Netherlands – There will soon be a new gerbera variety on the market with a decidedly French flavour, courtesy of Dutch breeder Florist De Kwakel.

It was a major team effort. The breeder worked closely with Master Chef Ron Blaauw, culinary journalist and chef Alain Caron, and PR consultant/secretary of the Dutch Hospitality Education Institute for Master examination Carsten Klint. They selected a special cocktail-coloured gerbera in honour of famous French chef Alain Ducasse, who visited the Netherlands last week to take part in the official presentation.

According to tradition, the new gerbera was festively baptized by pouring champagne over the flower, a ritual Ducasse found somewhat amusing. Assisting with the presentation was Florist De Kwakel export manager Sjaak Sijm.

Florist De Kwakel specializes in breeding and propagation of gerbera cut flowers and pot plants, with exports to over 80 countries worldwide.

‘Gerbera Alain Ducasse’ is a double flowered and two-toned cream/pink variety with black heart. It’s the result of four years of intensive breeding by Florist De Kwakel.

Ducasse "toasts" the new variety with champagne.
“The detailed colours of this particular variety symbolize warmth and ingenuity,” said a Florist De Kwakel spokesperson. “This is an appropriate flower choice for a man known for his worldwide innovative dining concepts and attention to detail, quality and pure ingredients.”

‘Gerbera Alain Ducasse’ will be available worldwide beginning in 2012.
