Cogen-for-electricity pioneers in Ontario
Written by Dave Harrison
Dec. 7, 2010 – Here's an update to our editorial in the December 2010 edition, "Cogen is good for the grid."

While we noted the recent Great Northern Hydroponics project in Leamington, we had a memory lapse and forgot two of Ontario's cogen-for-electricity pioneers – Westbrook Greenhouses in Grimsby, and Rosa Flora in Dunnville, both of which led the way for the industry many years ago. Our apologies for the oversight in the editorial.

The point of the editorial was to draw attention to the potential of greenhouses for electricity generation in a province which is seeking alternatives to traditional generation systems. The fact that greenhouses can utilize the waste heat and CO2 so effectively, while supplying electricity to the grid, is a win-win-win situation that we hope governments take time to study.

In the Netherlands, greenhouses supply between 10 and 15 per cent of the country's electricity.
