Dave Harrison Dutch leadership in Sustainability Initiative
Written by Dave Harrison
This blog will pick up the pace the week of Oct. 25-29 as I join nine other participants in The Sustainability Initiative, a project of the Office of the Agricultural Counselor at the Netherlands Embassy in Washington.

Our group will spend five days touring 24 different Dutch companies and research facilities engaged in everything from genetic seed modification to controlled environment greenhouse innovation, sustainability and long-range innovation philosophies. the tour will lead to discussion among the tour members on what we're seeing and how it relates to the broader world of horticulture.

You'll be able to follow along at www.thesustainabilityinitiative.org, and hopefully join in the discussions. The website will serve as a communication centre for the program, an opportunity for people to share their videos, images, updates, reports and general observations, all with a focus on "technological and practical issues in sustainable horticulture today."

I greatly appreciate being invited to participate, and know this will lead to continued coverage by the magazine of the growing – and inevitable – sustainability issues the industry will face over the coming years. What better place to start than with a tour of leading Dutch companies and research centres?
