Kwantlen Farmers Market given grant
Written by Dave Harrison

May 6, 2010, Langley, B.C. – The Langley Community Farmers Market , held at the Kwantlen Polytechnic University Langley campus, has received a grant of $3,000 from Coast Capital Savings Credit Union. The grant was awarded as part of the Coast Capital Savings Community Investment program, and will be used specifically to develop a strategic plan to bolster the market’s commitment to the Langley communities. The plan will help develop the future ideas of the market and build on a successful foundational year.

“It is terrific that the Langley Community Farmers Market has been given support by Canada’s second largest credit union,” said Gary Jones, president of the Market Society and Kwantlen horticulture instructor. “This award will help the market develop its long-term commitment to the customers and vendors who see real value in a local venue for high quality ‘make it, bake it or grow it’ goods. With many markets failing after just one year, and a high percentage failing within five years, the directors have already begun developing a strategic plan with the intent to secure the presence of the market for many years to come.”

Coast Capital Savings is Canada’s second largest credit union with total assets under administration of $12.9 billion, more than 425,000 members and 50 branches in the Metro Vancouver, Fraser Valley, and Vancouver Island regions of British Columbia.

Langley Community Farmers Market Society (LCFMS) is a non-profit organization that coordinates the Farmers Market with its operations based on the Kwantlen Langley campus. It contributes to the economic viability of local farms and businesses, allows producers and customers to interact and provides public education about food security and availability.

The market opens for the 2010 season on Wednesday, May 26th at 3 p.m.
