Written by Dave Harrison

Record-breaking sailor Zac Sunderland meets the media.
July 19, 2009, Marina Del Ray, CA — A little more than 13 months ago, 17-year-old Zac Sunderland embarked – with a little help from a Canadian produce company – on a journey to become the youngest sailor to circumnavigate the globe. And at 10 a.m. on July 16th, the California teen sailed into Marina Del Ray and fulfilled that goal.

“It’s awesome to be home,” said Sunderland, immediately after completing the 44,800-kilometre journey. “It was an incredible journey for me. I look forward to spending time with my friends and family.”

The teen was greeted with much fanfare, with news helicopters hovering above and scores of journalists from both national and international news agencies waiting to document the adventure. A crowd of about 250 well-wishers, including key sponsors Mastronardi Produce/SUNSET® and Produce For Kids, were on hand to welcome him home.

“We are very proud to be associated with this world record-breaking event and we applaud Zac for his courage and determination to complete this journey,” said Mastronardi Produce/SUNSET marketing manager Chris Veillon.

The Canadian company was one of the original sponsors that signed on in June of 2008 to support the voyage. During the course of Zac’s adventure, fresh greenhouse vegetables were shipped to him to eat while on the high seas.

When asked what his next adventure would be, Sunderland confidently responded that he was considering climbing Mount Everest, as well as sailing to Antarctica with his boat Intrepid.
