Jan. 03, 2008 — Ball Horticultural Company has been reviewing extensive consumer colour preference information, as well as published data from leading colour forecasters, and has uncovered three of the hottest trends that will have the most impact on shoppers this spring.
Consumers will be buying these colours in every retail category, ranging from fashion to home décor, including flowers and plants. Included will be rich shades of purple, energetic hues of yellow, and bright accents in orange.
Ball continues to focus efforts on researching the end consumer and determining what drives their purchase decisions. “Focusing on what your customer is really looking for will be even more important this year,” says director of marketing Diane Hund. “Colour has always been the number one factor in what people purchase.”
 PURPLE, PURPLE, PURPLE!
This is a well-established trend that surfaced as a hot fashion colour last fall. ‘Purple Flash Ornamental Pepper’ (top left) has striking flashes of bright purple foliage among the dark leaves that contrast well with small, glossy black fruit. These heat-tolerant plants are great for mixed containers and in-ground plantings.
VIBRANT HUES OF YELLOW
Pantone, which provides colour standards to design industries, specifically cites “mimosa” as its top shade of the New Year. ‘Lucky™ Pot of Gold Lantana’ (at right) has a unique compact habit that makes this item a top choice for small pots, baskets and mixed containers. 'Lucky’s' gold tones will give gardeners energy throughout the season.
 CITRUS BLENDS
Bright accents in citrus tones such as orange and yellow are in the forecast for 2009. ‘Matrix® Citrus Mix Pansy’ (bottom left) will brighten up retail displays with a colourful mix of orange, white and yellow. 'Matrix' delivers consistent branching and uniform flowering across the entire series. Move over pastels, bright rays of sunshine are coming to town!
